So Kyra was being very naughty the other night and did not want to sleep!!! Arrgghh! So since she was being a diva and not going to bed, Rabici decided to take some pictures of her so we could show her proof later in life that she really did scream her head off but then other times she could be really adorable.
Happy....
Crying....
Happy....
Crying....
And don't let her innocent look fool you! She knows it's 2:30 in the morning.

Drama
Okay so lately I'm full of drama...physically speaking that is. Right after I was done getting cut opened to bring my daughter into this world she had to stay in the hospital because she was sick. When she finally comes home I get a breast infection.
If that doesn't suck I have a bad reaction to the meds they gave me and I end up in the emergency room. I go to the emergency room where they do tons and tons of tests, including a spinal tap and lumbar puncture. Unfortunately I got the two stupidest doctors (tweedle dumb and tweedle dumber I call them) in Hawaii and they messed up the tests, continually poking around and not figuring out why I'm in pain and hurting me.
As if THAT doesn't suck they ended up taking out too much fluid and letting little organisms/bacteria into my body so now I have a spinal headache (too much pressure is going to my brain from the spine because there is a lack of fluid because they took out too much!) They gave me pain killers and sent me home saying "Don't get up, lay flat on your back for a week"
"What about my baby? I have a newborn" I say
"Don't take care of the baby" is their genius reply
Luckily I have the best ward in the entire world and they've helped me take care of my baby as well as bring us dinners since I have to lay on my back all day because of dumb and dumber.
AND if THAT doesn't suck I ended up back in the hospital yesterday because the pain killer they gave me wasn't working to alleviate the pain in my head. Why you ask? Well because the side affect of the pain killer was....you guessed it....headaches! They finally figured out the perfect combination of pain killers and antibiotics for me and now I'm laying on my back slowly getting better and enjoying my "pain killer cocktail" as the doctor put it.
I see a neurologist on Wednesday just to make sure I am okay and there's not some other condition going on. Everyone in my family and in my ward have been so awesome and there is no way I'll ever be able to repay them...never! But I'm so glad to have them! But still....such drama....Grrrr!

Home Sweet Home?
So Kyra came home last Saturday and it was such a relief to us. Her homecoming meant that she was 100% well and we were ready to be a family. I was excited and Rabici was thrilled. It even made it easier when the dinners from the ward sisters started to arrive.
I had no idea that so many things were going to change! In fact I made a list because it's late at night, the baby's not sleeping and I'm half delirous from exhaustion, a fever I've had from a breast infection for the past 5 days and a sick husband who has to work every night. So everyone ready? Great.
Things you other moms didn't tell me, or didn't want to tell me, or thought it would be funny not to tell me:
1) Your appetite for any kind of food leaves the second the baby comes home
2) Three hours between feedings is really 1 1/2 hours after you actually feed, burp, change and put the baby back to sleep
3) The shows I knew were on between the hours of 8am and 8pm are pointless since I am now awake between 12am and 8am
4) Laundry never gets done (for yourself) the baby's laundry is always being done
5) Poop changes color!!! What the...
6) Wipes run out faster than diapers
7) The living room couch is my new bed
8) Sanity is a luxury I can only dream to have again
9) Sleep is a luxury I can only dream to have again
10) Having fun is a luxury I can only dream to have again
Is this realy my Home Sweet Home? I wouldn't think so at first but then I see my daughter and I can't help but get over myself and my delirious tirade. I am grateful for all my blessings and even more grateful for all the help people have given me. But most importantly my Home wouldn't be as sweet if I didn't have my daughter or my husband to share it with.
I guess I'm writing this so that at the next 2 am feeding when I want to cry and talking jibberish thinking I'm making sense, I can read this and remember it's all worth it...I think...Just kidding...maybe...

Update
So no baby Kyra at home still! She's at Castle hospital still recovering and fighting her infection in her lungs. The doctors think she'll be home by Saturday (cross our fingers, knock on wood and pray to the heavens!) and then our little family will be complete.
Rabici and I go to the hospital everyday and spend hours just looking at her and playing with her. I can't get over how awesome it is to have a kid. She's only a few days old but I think everything she does is amazing and wonderful and special. (Yes, I'm going to be one of THOSE mom's)
I'm not the only one though! Rabici is the most doting father in the world! As I predicted, that little girl has him wrapped around her tiny little fingers and we both don't care. Now that she's been in the hospital so long I don't care if she's a brat for a little while, she deserves it after all she's been through!
But as promised, here are some more pictures of our little one...

The Story...
Okay, so here's what happened since I just wanted to get the baby's picture out there and forgot to say HOW we got the baby. As most of you know I had gestational diabetes, which means I needed to take insulin shots twice a day to help the baby with her sugar intake.
This type of diabetes means the babies are big and can't be carried all the way to 40weeks so I was going to be induced at 38 weeks. Well, they did stress tests on her and found that her little heart can't keep up with her big body during labor. So instead we did a c-section and it's a good thing we did!
I went in to the hospital around 10am and they operated on me at 12:30pm. When they took her out she had pooped in the amniotic fluid!!! And that's bad...especially if the baby breathes it in, which she did. Thankfully she didn't breathe in too much but she was still sick from it.
She had some oxygen problems, low blood sugar, and heart murmurs that scared us. Now, two days later, her blood sugar is back to normal, there is no heart murmur and her oxygen gets better and better. She's breastfeeding and taking formula to get her healthy enough to leave the hospital.
I have a wound that burns but it gets better every day...especially when accompanied by percocet!
So, like we promised, here are some more pictures!!!
Mommy burping baby Kyra after feeding.

I'm an Aunty!!!
So, on July 27th, at around 5:50 pm, I became an official Aunty. My brother has a son now and it throws into sharp reality how soon I'll be giving birth. AHHH!!!
Anyway, this little guy is 7 pounds, and 20 inches long. He's got spiky black hair and long eyelashes. And true to being a member of this family, he's loud. He was screaming and crying when he came out and if you don't hold him just right....he'll scream some more.
He's so adorable I can't stop taking pictures of him. (Be warned: he scowls a lot, but you would too if you just came out of a birth canal a day ago)
Here he is! John Jerald Manao'io Andrade Burgwinkel
He looks like an Israelite baby here
Me and Baby J.J. (That's what we're calling him)

Deja vu
So a couple years ago Rabici went in for surgery on his left knee because they found pieces of bone floating around in his leg, cutting up his tendons and muscles. It was July, 2007 and in August he went in for emergency orthoscopic surgery. He couldn't walk for almost 3 weeks and it took him a little over a month to fully recover. The reason I remember it so well is because I was also pregnant and had a miscarriage in September.
Fast forward to July 2009. Rabici's left arm's been hurting him so we went to the doctor's. He found pieces of bone floating around his elbow, cutting up his tendons and muscles. He now has to go in for emergency orthoscopic surgery for his arm and will not be able to use it for 4 weeks. I'm now 7 months pregnant and his surgery again will be in August.
I just can't believe this is happening all over again. At least this time it's his arm so I won't have to carry him around like I did with his leg. But this time his arm is worse than his leg was because they found arthritis in his arm since the bone is hurting it so badly.
I'm having a serious case of deja vu and it's not good. Why can't I have deja vu about Disneyland or going to the beach? Why do all the sucky things repeat themselves?
Grrrrr.

July synopsis
SO I've been negligent in posting and that's because I have barely enough energy to roll (and I mean roll) myself out of bed every morning and work. But we did do a lot this month.
July 4th we stayed at the Ala Moana Hotel and watched the fireworks that went on at Magic Island. Normally I hide indoors because of my asthma but we watched from the safety of our room balcony so I was fine.
July 9th I went to the Big Island and did a ton of research on my family tree. We were able to find names and help relative with temple work...all while I'm pregnant! Go me.
July 16th was Rabici's birthday and we celebrated by cruising around the island, going to doctor's appointments and then watching Harry Potter.
July 17th was Mom's birthday and I took her out for breakfast, shopping and a birthday dinner at Red Lobster. That place is awesome! Though it did creep me out to choose my own lobster to kill and eat. Oh well, that's what you get for being at the bottom of the food chain Mr. Lobster!
July 18th was our Stake Enrichment (4 hours of my life I want back) and a 1st baby luau...in Nanakuli!!! Now those of you who aren't familiar with the cities of Hawaii, the best way I can describe Nankuli would be to say it's Harlem, with a beach. No offense to those who love that side, but No thank you! It's a good thing my mom and I are dark and that we didn't bring my white dad. They left us alone.
Now it's July 21st and I'm not really doing anything significant. All the movies I want to see are already out and my life has lost all meaning and direction. :) Except for New Moon coming out 11.20.09!!! Score!

What's up with the Governor's?
So everyone knows about the recent scandal of Governor Mark Sanford. And who can forget Blagojevich? Well here in Hawaii the idiocy of Governor's has not ended. Gov. Linda Lingle has decided to keep up with the rest of the country and tick off the citizens living in her state.
Linda Lingle basically declared war on all state employees. Not only is she increasing our insurance premiums 18% but she's also instituting furloughs (days we are required to take off without getting paid) She claims it's being done in an effort to save money. Sure Linda, sure. Never mind that the money she received from the stimulus package was supposed to help us; instead she's decided to use it for the State's debt (WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT OBAMA SAID YOU COULDN'T DO!!!!)
Now because of this Governor I'm out of the best insurance I've ever had and my position's been cut because my school can't afford it. But not only has Governor Lingle messed with teachers and our union HSTA, she's messing with all the other unions too: HGEA, UHM, all of them. Everyone who's a STATE employee is getting hit and hit hard. Furlough days are going to be so much that the police are going to have to take over when the state workers are forced to stay home.
Brilliant Linda! Spread the ones who keep order thin that way we're not only getting robed by you but we'll also be attacked by criminals who probably lost their job because of you in the first place!
I just want to scream! I can't believe our Governor is getting away with this and that her scandal hasn't hit the news other than Hawaii. As far as I'm concerned, Governor Linda Lingle is just as corrupt as Blagojevich and just as immoral as Sandford.
A rally will be held tonight at the state capitol to protest this woman and her idiocy. You can't fix stupid and there's no fixing her. And personally I'm all for sterilization of stupid people. Hopefully the children of these morons don't procreate, or our children are screwed too.

TRANSFORMERS

Okay, so I didn't want to see "Transformers" on opening day because I knew EVERYONE else was going to be there too. But Rabici was dying to go and he rarely wants things, so I caved. I'm glad I did because the movie was awesome. All the hype surrounding it and the coverage for it was dead on. It was nonstop action throughout the whole thing!
We ended up going to the 10:50 PM showing because all the other ones were sold out. Then we had to stand in line for 40 minutes so we could get good seats! There were so many people that the theater made a second 10:50pm showing so everyone could see the movie. I would've gone to another theater but the only other theater in Kaneohe isn't showing Transformers until FRIDAY!!! Hello! That was dumb! The theater in the mall made a killing last night. The tickets alone are expensive but then everyone was getting drinks and snacks...they made a fortune off of all of us hard working people.
Even though we didn't get out until 1:30 AM, I was still awake during the movie since it was nonstop action the whole way through. But with that said I do have some questions...or gripes...depends on how you look at it.
1) What's up with this "ALL-SPARK"? Why is it that every machine it comes in contact with turns it into a Decepticon? Why are none of them being turned into a good guy or an Auto-bot?
2) What's up with the camera guy running everywhere Shia Lebeouf is running? Can we say Blair witch project? I felt so nauseated.
3) Why are there no female auto-bots? What, we're not good enough to turn into machines? And there aren't any female Decepticons either. Sexists! Girls make great villians! Not only can we kill people and blow things up, but we do it while looking cute. In the movie there's 3 female autobots who are ninja bikes but after the one speaking line they have, they get killed. They show the girls for two seconds and as one of them is speaking she gets killed. What's up with that? Jealous much?
4) Why do Optimus Prime's ancestors look exactly like the bad Fallen dude? They all look alike...and that's weird. Optimus doesn't look like Megatron and they're brothers! Did our imaginations just wear out towards the end Michael Bay? Did we just not have the energy to continue thinking up designs for these guys?
So basically that was my Wednesday night. Next movie I'm looking forward to: Harry Potter Half-blood Prince. YEA!

Happy Anniversary...NOT
So last week marked Rabici and my 4th year anniversary. And how did we spend it? In the hospital! That's right...we celebrated 4 years of marriage courtesy of Castle Medical Center. (GRRRRRR)
Basically I started getting these horrible stomach cramps Tuesday afternoon and they lasted all night. By 3 in the morning I felt like I was dying and knew I had to get to the emergency room. I didn't want to wake up Rabici to take me since he's got no more sick days for a while and he needed his rest to go to work. So i drove myself to the E.R. I know, stupid, but I really didn't want to wake him or have him miss work.
I arrived safely and they wheeled me into the birth center where they gave me test after test to figure out what was wrong. The baby was fine (nothing is ever wrong with her, it always seems to be me) and so they stuck an I.V. in and gave me pain meds. About 8 hours later I woke up with the chills and a fever of 102 degrees. I was vomiting and doing many other bodily things I will NOT mention.
They took me off of food and drink for 2 days and then slowly introduced food afterwards. I only started feeling better yesterday, Sunday, but I'm still not myself yet. All the doctors could tell me was that I had the stomach flu though I think it was something more. My body's kind of out-of-whack and I still feel nauseous and gross.
I know some of you were calling me this weekend and trying to get a hold of me and I am so super sorry! I just couldn't even raise my hand let alone talk to anyone. One thing that did cheer us up was that Aubrey dropped off a package from the young married group in our ward. It was a huge package filled with a DVD player, DVD's, cider, glasses, candles and candy. (They knew we were celebrating our anniversary in the hospital and sent us that treat) It was the nicest, most sincere gift I've ever received and I'm so grateful to have friends like that on the same island with me!! Rabici and I were so grateful.
Now I'm home and slowly getting back to normal. I'm also wondering how many of these episodes I'm going to have before I give birth. Don't get me wrong, words cannot express how grateful I am that nothing is wrong with baby, but at the same time I can't help but think about all the health problems I've had so far! But...now that I think about it more...maybe I only think it's harder because I'm pregnant. If all these health problems happened when I wasn't pregnant, I don't think I'd be complaining as much.
Hmmm. Interesting. I think I may be on to something here.
Anyway, thanks for all those who gave me your prayers and well wishes. I'm getting better. For those who didn't know...sorry, but I don't like telling people until after I'm done suffering! :)
And by the way ladies of Kaneohe 4th ward....NO meals! I mean it!

IT'S A GIRL!!!!!!
So Rabici and I went into the doctor on Wednesday for a check up and to get another ultra sound done. But my doctor said I couldn't get another one until I was 30 weeks. We were sad but decided to do other things and prep for baby. Well, I went to a store called "Hot Mama" to look at Maternity clothes and while we we were there Rabici saw a brochure for a place called "TomorrowToday"; an ultra sound company. They had different packages you could purchase in order to see pictures of your baby...and they look for gender (unlike the hospital which looks for diagnostic, and the overall health of your baby first).
So we found out they were in town and decided to do it. And there she was in all her glory, legs open wide, with an umbilical cord right between her legs! She is so stubborn! But with some moving around we got a glimpse and saw 3 lines which means she's a girl. What's funny is she kept moving her hands in front of her face every time we tried to look at her bum or between her legs; she's so modest.
I decided to download my favorite pictures for you all to check out. This is a 3D image of her smiling.
And this is of her covering her face in shame! :)
But there's also a whole gallery online if you want to see more pictures of our little girl (it came with the package). Just follow these instructions to see our own personal Web Galley:
1. Go to www.HawaiiUltrasound.com
2. Click on "Ultrasound"
3. Click on the “Clients” tab along the top
4. Enter our Password. The password for our Web Gallery is: vuikadavu
5. Wait a few seconds for the pictures to load.
Rabici, Me and little no-name baby girl hope you have fun!!!

AHHHH!!! New Moon!!!!

So I was surfing the web instead of working...not that anyone's shocked...and I saw that the New Moon poster was leaked!!! I saw it and though a lot of people don't like it, I do! I don't like Jacob until the 4th book but this looks like it's gonna be good!
What do you guys think? I must admit that after seeing the wolf pack, I'm ready to jump to TEAM JACOB. They're so cute!!!!

Why?
Why is it that when you're pregnant, you can't take any medication! I mean seriously...this is the one time in life that a woman is in constant pain, constant nausea and susceptible to every disease. BUT...we can't take anything for it!
And don't tell me I can take Tylenol; that junk is only good enough for a paper cut. I want Aleve, I want ibuprofen in 500 milligrams and I want my NyQuil! The good Lord knew that I was a wuss when it came to disease and pain so he let me be born in the 21st century with its technology and inventions so I could survive.
Is this punishment for the whole Eve giving Adam a fruit in the Garden of Eden? Because if it is i feel ripped off. Chances are Adam was whining about something to eat and to shut him up Eve handed him a fruit. She knew it was the wrong fruit but she probably figured: "Hey, not only will he stop complaining, he'll get kicked out and then I can be here in the Garden in peace."
Her plan backfired though so you fast forward thousands of years later and here I sit, whining and complaining about the fact I've been sick for a week straight with nothing to help me other than a Kleenex box and Halls cough drops.
And why am I whining and complaining? Because I needed to document this moment and have my child read it in the future so he or she understands why mommy needs her "special alone time" with a NyQuil bottle and a Robin Thicke CD playing in the background.

UPDATE: 2 things
First, since Kaytee thought my widget was creepy, I changed it. But I would like to say in my defense, that every other pregnant person's blog had that widget once and it took me FOREVER to find this one that would be less creepy. Only for you Kaytee, only for you. And how cute is the girl in this widget?! That's partly why I picked it; she has my ideal weight and looks.
Secondly, I am super excited since...for the next 3 months I am out of UH!!!!! YEAH!!! I have my last class on Wednesday but that's just the final. And then I am home free. So, if I don't answer anyone's texts, comments, or phone calls that's because I'm trying to make it through my last final.
Okay, that's all. Just thought I'd leave an update!

I don't think I'm ready...
Okay, so I'm pregnant. But recent events have brought the question to my mind, "Am I really ready?". I mean let's be honest; me...in charge of another human being...who can't eat, sleep or poop without my help? Doubtful, very doubtful.
This thought continues to be drilled in my head. I've talked to my mom about it and she tells me that you can never be prepared for things like this. No kid comes with an owner's manual (though I want them to) and you just have to do what comes naturally. Like some sort of maternal instinct.
Now I tell you that story, to tell you this one.
Yesterday I went to class and presented the research I've done so far on my paper. One of my classmates had to bring her 5 year old son since the husband is gone and no one could watch him. No problem. But this kid was ANNOYING. He was always singing at the top of his lungs or talking when other people were; and it wasn't unintentional. He'd wait till you wanted to say something and then belted his lungs out. His mom tried to hush him but she didn't give it much effort; like she did this everyday and it was no big deal.
Well then he starts running around the classroom, hitting a stick against the chairs. My teacher is trying to be understanding but at the same time is ticked off. Finally the kid hits my chair and I tell him, "Be careful, you're going to trip and fall."
He stuck his tongue at me!
So I stuck mine back. And he cried. Like I care. He tried to hit me but I held his head with my hand so his arms started swinging towards me but never hitting me. (You're probably wondering what the other people are doing. His mom's in the bathroom, my teacher is at the board with her back to me and the rest of the class is giving me the thumbs up)So finally he gets tired and gives up.
Class ends an hour later and as I'm leaving to my car so is my classmate and her son. She's telling the kid "Be careful you're going to trip." he sticks his tongue out at her and runs. Well obviously he trips, falls flat on his face and I run back inside laughing my head off. The look on his face when he realized he fell, after his mom and I said he was going to, was priceless.
But as funny as this is...I don't think I'm ready to have one of my own. But I can't really do anything about that now can I?

I'm pregnant!
Okay, so now I'm ready to tell people...I'm pregnant! I'm about 13 weeks pregnant to be exact. In case you're wondering why I waited this long to tell, it's because I had a miscarriage 2 years ago when I was 9 weeks. There was no way I wanted to go through that pain again, so we waited.
Now that I'm in the 2nd trimester, no longer feel like I'm going to throw up my insides and don't have to pee every other hour...I am happy. I'm not going to lie, this child was a demon at first. Some might think that's harsh for me to say, but it's true. I have the hospital visits, medication, and tears to prove it. Hopefully it'll be a better newborn than it was a fetus but we all know how well that worked out for Elizabeth! :)
We'll get to see what it is at the end of May. Rabici and I are hoping for a boy, but my mom is hoping for a girl. I'll be okay with a girl, I just really want a boy. I've always wanted a boy first (like he'll protect his little sister later on or something).
So that's our great news to tell! I will be keeping everyone updated on my progress. Thanks to those who've already wished me well and I'm glad to be joining the ranks of mother's...it's going to be interesting.

Not so good with putting the words together
So this is nothing earth shattering but Rabici and I had a hard time communicating this morning. Normally I wouldn't blog about this since this is sometimes a regular occurrence. However, what we said to each other this morning made me laugh so hard I began to cry.
Okay, so I'm getting ready to leave for work and to drop my sister-in-law off at school. I realize that Rabici is late for work so I ask: "Do you want to drop us off and take the car or are you going to catch the bus?"
He says: "Yes."
Yes what? Yes to the first or second! Sheesh! So I shake my head at him, give him a 2 second lecture about how annoying that is, and we leave so he can drop us off.
Well he sees something on my neck and says, "What's that? Is that a scar?"
I say: "Does it hurt?"
Rabici says, "Um...Yeah?" Then we both cracked up because we realized how dumb we sounded.
Yeah I know, I was retarded. I meant to say "It hurts" but for some reason I asked him "Does it hurt?".
(sigh) Oh well. It just shows that sometimes, we're not so good with the putting the words together.

Fool me once, shame on you...fool me twice...

Okay, I got my Twilight DVD last night, actually I got it at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 20th. How is that possible, you may ask. Well, that is the beauty of ordering on amazon.com
The last thing I wanted to do was go to a midnight party at borders again where the 12 year old girls are screaming frantically about how much they love Edward and how they're the future Mrs. Cullen and blah, blah blah. Plus, I didn't want to fight off the middle age women who wanted to buy a copy for themselves, their friends, their co-workers, etc.
So, I decided to order it online, wait an extra day or two until it came in because it would be worth skipping the drama. Well imagine my surprise when Friday night I'm holding the twilight DVD, very carefully, in my hands. I got it before everyone else, even people waiting in line on the east coast! Ha! Ha!
But my joy was short lived. I watched it the second I could and was instantly saddened. I hate it! I hate it, I hate it, I hate it! How is it possible for me to go from hating it, to tolerating it, to semi-liking it, to hating it again?
Two words: Deleted Scenes.
I was stupid enough to listen to that stupid Catherine Hardwicke talk about scenes she cut but wished she could've left in because they were so "Cool". And then I was even stupider to watch them! Most of them never happened in the book and would've made the movie look like a cheesy porno! Watch the special features, you'll know what I mean.
I took the DVD out, slammed it in it's cover and threw it on my desk. I'm disappointed...again, and this time it's all my fault. I thought it would be better this time, I thought I overcame my hatred for the Hardwicke idiocy in the movie. But alas, I was only fooling myself.
Shame on me.

Stoked
So I'm pretty much bored with my students and decided to sneak onto the internet and look up the movie times for some of the new one's that came out so my husband and I could go watch them this weekend.
Imagine my surprise when I find the movie trailers to some of the movies I'm dying to see this year!!!!
First: Harry Potter and The half-blood Prince. It's so dark and mysterious and scary...I can't wait. I know it's not like the book but...spoiler for you people who've been living in a cave and haven't read the book....this is when Dumbledore dies and all the drama starts to unfold.
Second, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Now I'm not a huge transformers fan. My husband is. When we went to the first movie he sat next to me and told me the name of every character before they were introduced. I just remember the Saturday morning cartoons when my brother watched them. But, after seeing the movie with Shia LeBeouf, I have to say...I am excited for the next one. It looks just as action packed, if not more and I can't tell if the good guys win in this one. Is this just the second movie in a trilogy?
Lastly, Monsters vs. Aliens. It's coming out next week and I can't wait. It looks hilarious and I've been waiting for a funny movie to come out for a while. Everything looks like its action-packed or horror-filled and I want some comedy!
I'm so stoked!

sick, sick, sick
So, I haven't posted for a while since I've been so sick. I'm talking hospital visits, wires sticking out of me, coughs, and pains all over. It sucked and I felt like doing nothing. I didn't even want to go to work but had to since I gotta take care of all the little things like a roof over my head and food in my belly.
Basically I got a UTI; for those of you who don't know what that means it stands for Urinary Tract Infection. This is the first one I ever had in my entire life and it was horrible. They gave me medication that I had to take twice a day, every day, for 2 weeks. Then I got a horrible cough with all the gross cold systems to go along with it. Needless to say, it has not been a good 2 weeks.
My doctor gave me some medication that is starting to make me feel better and I'm grateful. I can't keep taking sick leave or else I won't have any left and then I'll be forced to come to work for the rest of the year with no break! No thank you! Anyway, I thought I'd update you on my situation and why I've been negligent for so long. I'll try and make sure that doesn't happen again.
One advantage I have had for being sick......Rabici gives me foot rubs. Yeah me!

Valentines
I hope all of your Valentines day, and for some of you Single Awareness Day, was fun. I remember always doing something on Valentines Day whether I was with someone or not. But this past Saturday was one to remember.
First let me tell you how other Valentines Day's have gone in the past with me and Rabici. When we started dating it was in July of 2003. He left a week before Valentines Day in 2004 and I didn't see him again until June of 2005. So he had no frame of reference on this American holiday. I can forgive that....somewhat.
February of 2006: It's Valentines Day, Rabici says he's got it all planned out. We went to his rugby game. Kelly not happy.
February 2007: We got into a fight about something, I can't even remember what, and we went to Zia's as a last ditch effort to salvage the night. I was red-eyed and puffy from crying, Rabici was irritated and it sucked. Kelly not happy.
February 2008: I planned it...we went to Disneyland...can you beat that?...no ways. Kelly very happy.
So what happened on Valentines this year?
February 2009: It's his turn to plan it...again...I'm wary. We get up, get breakfast, relax and go on......The Honolulu Screamer! I'm not kidding! some might think it's not romantic enough but I thought it was awesome! It's a 45 minute ride through the water and the driver takes you on spins, dives, and other things that make you practically fly out of your seat and soak you head to toe. Good job honey! Now let's see what he does for February 2010.

Wednesday Update
Okay, so here's the latest in my Wed. night class.
We went on a field trip to the Manoa Heritage Center, which is actually pretty cool. It's this large Tudor mansion with a restored heiau (sacred burial site) and gardens which have indigenous and endemic Hawaiian plants. On the way there we decided to carpool and like the idiot I was, I agreed.
This is why I'm an idiot: We pile into two cars and I should've realized this earlier but the people driving have those enviornmental safe cars that could probably fit one person and a pencil. There are eight of us in the class. So four of us have to cram into one and four into the other; not a problem for everyone else since they eat grass. They're not the red meat lovers I am so there's no fat on their bones. They do me the courtesy of letting me sit in the front seat...thaaaannks.
Have you ever seen those clowns who drive the really small cars around in a circus? Well, they looked better than me. My knees were crammed into my face, my arm was out the window and my butt was so low to the ground I thought I slid the whole way there instead of driving. When we finally got out i was relieved to get out of the car but the weirdness had just begun.
The guide talked for 20 minutes before he even started the actual tour. I was leaning against one of the trees, since there was nothing else to sit on, when he screams, "Please do not lean there!"
I jump up and say, "Why? Is there a bug or something?"
He says, "No! But it's a tree! How would you like it if someone leaned their body against you?"
I said "I don't know, is that someone Steven Strait?"
He glares and moves on.
Next is the garden part and the guy's sooooo boring. So I decide that it's up to me, yet again, to bring life to the pary. I start making jokes about some things. For example, he shows us a plant that was used by Hawaiians to fish. He says that they would throw the root into the water and it would numb the fish so they could reach in and pick them out. So someone asked, "What do they call that?" and i said "Cheating." Everyone but the tour guide laughed.
Then he showed us the garden with plants that were used to feed Hawaiians (sweet potatoes, taro, etc.) So he points to one plant and says that it was a last resort to eat; only when you were starving. So I said, "Kind of like Mac & cheese or cup of noodle."" Again, he glares while everyone laughs. I'm thinking, what's up with guy? I'm killing out here and he won't even crack a grin!
I decided to be really annoying and I took pictures with my camera phone while he was talking, so in the middle of his sentences all you'd hear is this loud "CLICK". When he was done I ran up to him and said, "I got some great stuff!" I showed him the camera and said, "Look! Here's you talking...and then here's you pointing...and then here's you talking again...and again...and again....and again....and here's you scratching your leg....and then you're talking again..."
He wasn't really happy. I can't imagine why. We're going to some garden thing in Aiea next week. Do not fear, you shall hear all about it! :)

101 ways to annoy people #16
So I decided to start my own running post about something I feel passionately about: annoying people who annoy me. Now, these ways can be hilarious if used in the appropriate way. Please do not inflict this pain on those you know who are NOT annoying...unless you're bored...then maybe its okay. But I claim no responsibility if you do these and you're killed, beaten, stabbed, ostracized, or in any other way physically, emotionally, or mentally injured.
#16 Reply to everything someone says with "That's what YOU think!"

Conversing with others
So here are some conversations I had last night in class. FYI, I'm "K" and anyone else in class is "A"...for Annoying.
K: (takes out piece of paper) So, what are we doing with this?
A: What is that? (points at paper)
K: Paper...why?
A: I hope that's recycled paper
K: (stares at A)
A: Because if it's not recycled paper you're contributing to the wastefulness of this country and the world.
K: (continues to stare at A)
A: Is it?!
K: Is it what?
A: Is it recycled?!
K: I would use recycled paper, only I like my trees freshly cut...gives it that nice pine fresh smell.
A: Are you planning on going to the Global Warming Lecture at 7 tonight?
K: No
A: Why?
K: Because I have a life
A: This is about the world Kelly, what could be more important?
K: My life
A: But Global Warming does affect your life...
K: I know, it affects it negatively. And I've made a promise to remove all negative things in my life. Do you really want to be the reason why I failed?
K: Where are we meeting next week?
A: The Manoa Heritage Center
K: And that would be...
A: In Manoa
K: More specifically?
A: Why don't we carpool?
K: Sure, where do you want me to meet you?
A: By the peace Garden
K: The what?
A: the Peace Garden...it's by the earth sculpture.
K: The who?
A: The earth sculpture! The one created out of all natural materials?
K:(stares at A)
A: All right then, you pick a place.
K: Meet me at the cow factory
A: The what?
K: McDonald's

God answers prayers
So I already knew this, but God answers prayers. FYI for all you who did not know this. The experience of the past week is evident of this.
On Friday morning, about 3:30am, my mom woke up to pains in her chest. She drove herself to the hospital since she tried to call me and Rabici and neither of us woke up (our phones were on silent). My phone is NEVER on silent at night. I always have it on because I never know about emergencies and stuff. Well, the one night I have it on silent is the one night my mom needs me. My dad is in Louisiana and so there's no one home to help her.
She goes to the hospital and by a miracle doesn't kill anyone on the road or herself. She checks in, they do tests...it's her heart. They're not sure if she had a heart attack, panic attack, angina, or what, but they need to keep her in there. At 7 am I finally get up, Rabici listens to his voice mail, tells me what happened and I rush to the hospital. The doctors said there was something wrong with her heart.
We fasted, prayed, and asked for a blessing. Johnathan and Rabici blessed her last night. We were all afraid, worried, and sad. I was anxious and upset. Why didn't I hear her call? We have no family history of heart problems, why now? Why her? Luckily I didn't make the same mistake of the past where I questioned the Lord. I simply wondered how we arrived at this point.
This morning she went in for an angioplasty. She called me at 10am. The doctors couldn't find a thing wrong with her. They said, "Whatever was there, is no longer there. We don't understand."
I understand. God answers prayers. He rewarded us for our faithfulness, for our hope, for our love of my mom. It's not her time and she was healed. I can't express how happy I am. I was so stressed worrying about her and my mom is such a typical silent warrior- didn't want anyone to know her situation. I love my mom, I love that she's all right, I love my husband for being worthy enough to bless and ask the Lord to heal her, I love that God loves me, and I LOVE that God answers prayers!

Haole
So this discussion came up in my Thursday night class when we talk about culture and identity. My Professor had written an article about people in Hawaii and how they don't group people into races, but into local and non-local. I agree. We do this. I personally think it's better than race; instead of signaling someone as black, puerto rican and whatever else you can think of it's just two categories (either you're from the islands or you're not). I think that's fine, as long as you don't mean it as something derogatory or demeaning.
Any-who, my professor talked about the definition of "haole" and claimed it meant foreigner, but that most people think it means white or caucasian. This is also true. Over the years "haole" has had a negative connotation to it and I must admit, I've used it (mostly when joking) to describe people. Kaytee & Elizabeth are personal witnesses to me poking fun of "haole's" and "my people" vs. "your people". The reason I'm writing about all this is to shed some light on the word most (even native Hawaiians) believe to mean foreigner.
Haole does NOT mean foreigner.
The literal translation is this: HA means breath, or life. OLE is a shortened form of A'ole, which means "no". So the literal translation is: no life or no breath. Hawaiians used this word to describe foreigners since they arrived in the islands with no "ha" or life (they didn't ask permission from the Gods to eat, to kill, to use resources, etc.) In Hawaiian eyes, to do these things meant you did not have any "ha".
This is also evident in the one word everyone knows on the mainland, "ALOHA". Notice the "ha"? That's why our greetings for hello, goodbye, and love all have "ha" in it; we are sharing breath or life with you.
To not have "ha" means you are haole. So no matter what your race, Hawaiian, Filipino, Chinese, White...if you do not show that you have life, breath or love for your fellow man, for nature, for everything around you, then you're haole.
So, if anyone from the islands claims you're haole, you need to tell them this definition. Because in actuality, if they're trying to demean you, then they're haole; without life. Just thought I'd write that for all my "haole" peeps who I love to hang out with! You are definitely full of ha! :)

Oh, the voodoo that you do....
Okay, this story is just too crazy to make up. It really happened, none of its fake and I'm not that surprised that it happened to me.
On Thursday night I have my class about diversity and identity. Our homework was to bring two items that represent who we are. I automatically grabbed something that represented my Hawaiian culture because I closely identify with that, but it was hard to find a second thing. I saw one of those free book of mormons on my bookshelf and thought, "That makes sense. Being a member of the church is a strong part of my identity." I took it and put it in my bag.
All day at work I worried and fretted about sharing this book. There are some smart people in my THURSDAY class and not everyone is receptive when you tell them you belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At the last minute I decided not to share the Book of Mormon. I admit it...I cowered. I was hesitant and anxious to share it.
Well, class started and I got the overwhelming feeling that I needed to get over myself and just share the gospel with my classmates. I took a deep breath and did it. I showed everyone the Book of Mormon, bore my testimony and ended. There wasn't a massive conversion all of a sudden, but there was acceptance. Everyone in the room was open to me and no one judged. (Not that I could see anyway) Then the girl after me takes out her voodoo doll. I'm NOT kidding. Apparently she got it when she was a kid after her mom went on a visit to New Orleans. She talked about how this doll (it's black with all these markings and crazy stuff on it) chases away her bad dreams. Well everyone is now enthralled by it! They all want to know about voodooism and they're asking her all these questions.
I felt defeated and hurt. Why would the Lord push me to share the gospel and then have voodoo girl follow after me? What did I do wrong? Did I wait too long? Did I question him too much? All these questions swam in my mind as I went outside during our break. I wanted to hide in the bathroom and not come out. I felt like a failure.
One of the students (he's from India) stopped me before I went into the bathroom and asked me if he could see the book I showed everyone. I asked him why and he said that he felt lost and hearing what I said made him feel like he wasn't so lost anymore. (I'm not ad libbing here, this is what he said) I ran back into class, got him the book and gave him a brief summary of what the Book of Mormon and the church is all about. He was so intrigued by it and I have no idea what will happen. He may want to take the discussions, he could decide its nice but nothing more. I don't know.
What I do know is that something great came out of this experience. I was tested, I succeeded in the end. The Lord knew I was feeling down about the voodoo and everything and he told that indian student to come talk to me. I love the feeling I got afterwards. I love that I did what I was supposed to. And I love that I'm able to share this experience with all of you. So if you feel scared or anxious sharing the gospel...don't! It'll be worth it, trust me. And If you don't trust me, trust the Lord...he ALWAYS follows through.

The 44th
So its official, Barack Obama is the 44th president of the United States of America. Living in Hawaii means the inaguration happens at 5:30am our time and I wasn't going to get up that early. But, I did get up in time to hear him be sworn in and hear his speech.
I've been back and forth on the Obama issue; Should I vote for him? Will he be good enough? Is he a God fearing man? All these questions swirled in my mind in November and I did my best to research all I could about both candidates. I wanted to make sure that no matter what decision I made, even though my vote is small compared to the rest of the U.S., that I made an educated decision with eyes wide open.
Will Obama be a good president? I don't know. Will Obama be able to do all the things he promised? I don't know. Will Obama prove all those who voted against him right or all of those who voted for him right? Who knows?!
What I do know is that I have the brightest hope for this country and its potential. I hope that we will be a better nation. I hope that people will change for the better and become the type of Americans I know we can be. We're a super power for crying out loud! We should know and act better than others since we have been blessed a hundred fold.
There are a lot of people in my immediate circle of family and friends who hate this man. The simple fact is, he's president and in the words of Abraham Lincoln "A nation divided amongst itself cannot survive". It is your right, and mine, to not agree with him, to fight the unjust bills that may come across his table, and to speak out when we feel our country is suffering from corrupt rule. But I beg for you to find hope and peace for your souls so that we do not divide amongst ourselves but become a stronger nation and a stronger people.
If you want to look at his full speech from this morning click on the link below.

New Semester...New laughs
So it's a new semester for me which means new classes, new students, and new funny moments to share with all of you. My first class at UH was last night and it's called Environmental Education. The course is described as "forming curriculum for schools that focus on environmental awareness."
That is not what we did yesterday.
The class I sat in yesterday was a hippy's dream. The syllabus is only a paragraph long and explains how we'll be focusing on peace gardens, how to make one and how they can bring inner peace as well as peace to others. O-k-a-y.
Then it says we'll be going on field trips. I'm okay with that, I like field trips. But these trips are to the nature conservatory and some compost heap that only my third grade teacher would MAKE me go to. But I tell myself it's okay, at least I get out of the classroom.
And then the introductions happen and I realize...this is going to be a repeat of last semester. Everyone in the room is talking about how involved they are with the environment, the activist roles they've taken to stop pollution and the healthy food they eat. Here I am, a six foot carnivore who uses plastic and styrofoam plates, and the only awareness I have is to throw my garbage in the trash. Great.
So one of my classmates talks about how she lived in England for 11 years and how she worked at a school started by Satish Kumar (Apparently he walked around the world for peace, I had no idea until I googled him last night). Then she gets into a discussion about how plants are the true food that God has bestowed on us and at this point I can't resist. I raise my hand and talk about the Bible and how it talks about animals and how they were actually given to man (I remember talking about that in seminary)
My comments could be seen as uncaring and brash, but I had to defend myself! I was the only meat-loving, ozone depleting person in the room! Meat lovers of the world unite! was my motto. Everyone was mad at me...even the teacher. But who cares? I'm not afraid of them...much. I just hope they don't wrap me in lettuce and offer me to their tree God. That would suck.

Just some added thoughts
So I'm 9 days into my resolutions and I wanted to do a review just because I realized that my goals are more temporal than spiritual. The "temper resolution" is spiritual to a certain extent. And I must admit...I am a happier person. I didn't realize how quick my temper flares up for little things like being behind a schedule I had set for myself or someone driving at 10 miles per hour. don't get me wrong, I still get upset, but I recognize it and stop myself from saying, doing or thinking anything else that would continue the anger. Because I do that...I'm happier.
Rabici and I sat down yesterday and discussed so many things about this year. We are always so busy that it's a miracle for us to be together. During the winter break from my masters and from students we've caught up on a lot of "we" time. And during that "we" time we've settled on some spiritual goals as well. Mostly they have do with an increase in scripture study, individual prayers and so on. Which made me think about how as latter-day saint's and a children of God we know better, but sometimes we don't act better. And by we, I mean me in this instance. I'm speaking about myself for this post since I'm reviewing my own goals and resolutions.
I mainly want to express my gratitude for everyone in my life who has made me want to be a better person. For my friends out there who keep me smiling and laughing, you are the only reason I haven't died of a heart attack; you keep me young and as healthy as I cn be eating the way I do! For those I'm not too friendly with, you allow me to work on what I lack in patience, forgiveness, and just getting over myself.
I think is this is one of the most thoughtful, non-angry, posts I've ever had. Maybe it's because I'm doing what I'm supposed to and what my Primary, Young Women, Seminary and BYU-H professors have been teaching me to do for forever! Wow, took me long enough. :)

To the movie talkers...BEWARE
I don't know how many of you have heard this story about the Phildelphia guy who shot a dad being loud in a movie theater but if you haven't here's the scoop. 29-year old James Cialella Jr, who went to a screening of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, pulled out a gun and shot another man in the arm because he and his family were being noisy.
Cialella was annoyed when the family wouldn’t stop talking. He told them to be quiet, but the youngest son decided to be a smart butt and became even noisier. Cialella then threw popcorn at him in an attempt to get him to stop. But since that failed he decided that the next course of action would be to pull out his gun and shoot the father in the arm.
Now, I'm not condoning violence in the least. When you're mad, you don't pull out a gun and shoot people. But......I do know where this guy is coming from. I mean, you shell out 9 or 10 dollars to see this movie, you get some snacks and sit down and all you want to do is enjoy. But then some jerk and his son start talking and ruin the whole darn thing for you! You try to get them to stop, asking them nicely or shushing them but nothing works!Should he have walked out of the movie and complained to someone else, YES. Should he have had words with the family when they left, MAYBE. I want to say the guy had it coming and that I don't blame Cialella, but I can't. Guns are awful and I must admit that I too have talked in a movie theater. (Not as loud or obnoxious as this Philedelphia family, but I have talked).
I guess my two main reasons for posting about this is because 1) I can't believe this actually happened and 2) If you're a movie talker, you better watch out. Because one time there may be another person like Cialella who will whip out their gun and not think twice about making you shut up.
